This is limited to Send A and Send B however, which is fine for Ableton Lite but less useful if you have more sense. Like the volume and panning, you can use the controller to set the levels of send FX. FX You’ve also got buttons for controlling the sends - the global FX you can send individual tracks to. This can be a useful way to get a bit more tactile in your sound mixing if you don’t have a separate mixer controller like the Novation Launch Control XL MKII or don’t want to use your mouse on the screen.

Full volume for a track will mean all eight pads in a track are lit up but they turn off from top to bottom as you run your fingers down to the bottom pad as the volume lowers. It does this cleverly by lighting the pads up vertically for volume that you can reduce by stroking the pads down or back up, and horizontally by strong the pads left and right. Mixer Mode There is also the ability to switch the Novation Launchpad X into a mixer mode to allow you to adjust the volume and stereo panning of each track. You’ve also got a button to put you into arm mode - this allows you to change the active track.

These can be useful in a live setting or to help you mix and engineer the sounds you are trying to achieve. There are also buttons for putting a track (column) into solo mode and for muting a track. This really helps Ableton Live be a good live performance tool but also for trying out your song production before getting into arrangement view. This is great if you think of a scene as a section in your song such as the intro, verse, bridge or chorus. In addition to the navigation buttons, the Novation Launchpad X also includes additional buttons for launch an entire scene (a row of clips) together. Ableton Live does allow a session view with more columns and rows than the physical pads on the Novation Launchpad X so it includes additional buttons for navigating around the session for moving horizontally and vertically around the session. Performance Pads The Novation Launchpad X has a grid of 8 x 8 performance pads that map to the session view. Each performance pad on the Novation Launchpad X maps to one of these clip cells for launching them individually so you can compose your song or perform it in real time.

Ableton Live is famous for its Session view with its columns per midi instrument or audio track and rows per scene - with each cell in the Excel spreadsheet like format playing a different midi or audio clip. This means anyone can create a groove and jam along and start to layer different musical elements together to create a song. This is particularly great for beginner musicians who can’t play traditional keyboard or piano instruments as the Novation Launchpad X will light up the performance pads corresponding to the key of the song you are producing with the root note of the key displayed in a different colour. This means you can use the Launchpad X as a musical instrument for live performances in Ableton Live. What is it? The Novation Launchpad X is a sound clip launcher that includes multicoloured velocity sensitive performance pads.
